Did they change the numbers then? There's a big writeup about it in the April 06 Motorcyclist magazine... dyno listing of a 06 SV with the Ninja said:

650R

64.8hp @9000
44.7ft-lbs@7250

SV650S

71.1hp@9000
45.9ft-lbs@7250

Looking at the dyno comparison, the SV holds more than 40ft-lbs from 6000 through to 9250 or so, the 650R is only able to hit that amount between 6500 to 8250.

The SV is claming a 434lb (wet) vs the 650R's 441 (wet), also. Interestingly though, the SV holds .4 gallons of gasoline more, so that may be a slightly bigger difference thatn it appears.

Overall conclusion on the artical was basically that the 650R cost $150 more, and was very well worth it for anything but absolute performance work. The SV650S giving up a bit of comfort, comparatively, but being faster at the track and through the canyons. Farther yet though, they said the best deal of all is still the SV650 (non-S), if you don't mind the lack of the fairing.

But damn, it's about time that someone decided to start making sensible, reasonably fast, bigtime fun bikes for the mere mortals that aren't setting the track on fire with blistering times.

I read a couple of the articles they had about it. And basically, what i got from it is "Finally, a full fairng'd twin that isn't cost prohibitive". I mean, it seemed like EVERY MAGAZINE made that a point "all this in a full faring to boot". God damn, can you lay it on any thicker? But like alot of you said, you'de get it for you're GF wife. It's like the Cabriolet of the bike world....girls only

I'd ride it... it looks like a fun little bike! Did you see it in race trim?

we've got a couple of them racing with us at wsmc. compared to the sv it is far more expensive to get the same hp and handling when it comes to mods. still it is brand new and the first of the inline twins (that i'm aware of)** so it stands to reason that a few years from now they'll hve figured some cheap ways of extracting good power and handling out of it. and to critisise it for having unsophisticated suspension in the same breath that you compare it to the sv is silly. cause the stock sv has much poo poo suspension too. they both need to have the shock swapped out and the forks revalved to get any performace out of them. as far as what they sound like, somewhere between a 90* twin and an i4...that is, the "thump thump thump" of the twin with a higher note of inline sound quality. more of a "wegga wegga wegga" sort.

**edit. woops- i must have forgotten about the ninja and ex/500. still it is supposedly a clean slate design over those engines so they may still find cheaper ways of extracting more power.

Cycle World test riders loved it. It was the first article in that months isue that I read. It does look like a blast to ride on the street and if I had not bought a FZ6 last year I would consider one, I have been trying to convince the GF to buy one lol.
