Default Handlebars LOCKED turing corner, RIDER DOWN...

Well I haven't rode my bike in about 2 months I took it out today because I busted the oil pan in my cage and had the oil pan in hand on the bike to take and get welded, when I was turning out of my neighborhood ( a left turn) the handlebars locked as if it was in the lock position from the key and I was unable to reverse the turn the bike tossed me on to the curb...

Funny thing is I had just went back in the house to get my helmet because it was more than a mile ride on the highway, THANK GOD I did, my head hit directly on the CURB, HARD, but of coarse I felt nothing since I had my helmet on, but it does have some nice rash on it how, I'll put some pics also my frame slider took most of the damage on the bike

In any case I was wondering if anyone has heard anything like that where the handlebar LOCKED in a turn causing an accident, when I picked the bike back up the bars were free..I checked it good and didn't find anything wrong, so I don't know what happened... VERY STRANGE

comments on the handlebar?

not quite sure how you were riding with only one hand but i'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the bars didn't lock on you because the only way for them to lock is to be ALL THE WAY to the left, and i can't ever remember the last time i had mine all the way turned while actually riding.

so by you not having both hands on the bars, it probably felt as if something locked, but something caused the bike to throw you off. next time use two hands while riding.

by "in hand" do you mean it was actually in your hand?

If so, how the hell did you even make it to the street? I'm with pepe on this one. it probably just seemed like it was locked. Maybe you pulled away from the stop with your clipons already turned to a sharp degree before you gave it gas. Motorcycles don't like it when you do that.

I think hes trying to see how to break the lock off to steal the bike

ok to give more detail, I had the oil pan in a grocery store plastic bag then had the 2 rings on the plastic bag around my 2 middle fingers on the right hand so I was able to still ride..

I was only turning the corner at about 10-12 mph if that fast and I remember right before I went down I looked down at the bars because when I turned them left I tried turning them right to come out of the turn and when I looked down the first thing that came to my mind was DAMN the bars are locked! (because they are in the exact same position when you lock it) I gave it a quick jerk but it didn't budge and within that same second I was tossed onto the curb...

the other thing I thought of was that the oil pan bocked the wheel somehow, but i doubt it the size of it and I'm sure I would have felt it tug, I guess I need to test that as well with something similar in size and it if it could happen but I doubt it..

Note: Riding with anything other than your clipons in either hand is a bad idea

Like PepeRB29 said, I don't know anyone who has ever had their handlebars turned fully while actually riding. In order to lock the handlebars, there is a pin on the key housing that needs to line up with a hole on the frame when the handlebars are turned fully - and that pin only engages by turning the key all the way to the left.

The fact that you had something in your right hand and was not able to turn right leads me to believe that some how YOU caused it to lock up.

There have been some cases of this happening on the Triumph 675s but that is caused by the bolt holding on the the damper coming loose and hitting the lower triple...once again, don't think this is what happened in your case.

Re-read Barr6's post.

Cool

You could lock your handle bars with one hand by doing a wheelie, but in order to lock the handle bars like that is a major rider mistake `and the R6 its easyer to lock the bars because it turns very sharp thats why rideing a R6 without a damper is stupid

I'm going to guess that your handlebars didn't lock up....but only felt as if they had locked up. The reason is.....you said you were taking a left hand turn. What may have happened is......that while you were taking that left hand turn.....the oil pan in the plastic bag that was attached to your finger(s) on the right handlebar, probably started to swing forward as you tried to tug handlebars back the other way.....making it feel as if they were locked....but due to the weight of the oil pan in the bag...it was just adding resistance the other way......causing you to lose control.....and go down.

I had a similar experience with a plastic bag full of some groceries I attached to my handlebars to my 10speed racing bike I had as a kid.

That's why you should NEVER have anything attached to your handlebars or in your hands that can cause you to lose steering control......

Good thing you were wearing a helmet!!!

i had a similar experience, i had a gallon of milk in a plastic bag hanging on my left hand, and when i made a left turn, it was soo hard to put the handle bars back into normal position. because of the weight of the milk. becareful! get a back pack next time! =)
