So last Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, we had a nice 73 degree day here in D.C. I rode into work and since they let us out early, I decided to go for a ride and enjoy what would possibly be the last ride of the season. I stop off to grab a smoke and I checked my cell phone. I had a missed call/message from my buddy who has a MV Agusta. I figured he was calling to meet up and get some riding in. I listened to the message but instead of him, it was another dude he was riding with calling to let me know that my buddy went down pretty bad. He had him call me since I have a pick up truck. I called back and talked to the dude. He told me that the paramedics were there and they were about to medivac him to the hospital. Apparently, his leg was banged up pretty bad.
Long story short, they were on the backroads and my buddy went into a turn and low sided and he and the bike tumbled for a while. (Luckily he was wearing full leathers and boots). By the time I got to the hospital, they were just taking him into surgery.
After the surgery, I talked to the doc. He said that he basically had a compound break of the shin right about the ankle. The bone had actually broken through his skin and was shattered. They ended up putting some pins in his leg and said that he was looking at about 2 more surgeries. The main thing they wanted to keep an eye on was making sure infection doesn't set in. After they get that under controll they're going to put some plates in there and will end up taking a piece of bone from his hip to put in the space where the bone was shattered. After that, he said that since the injury was in a place where the skin doesn't really grow back, he was looking at some plastic surgery to repair the skin. Also, he will need to put risers in his shoe from now on because one leg is going to be shorter than the othere. He's going to be in the hospital for at least a week or so.
I visited him again on Thanksgiving and he's in good spirits. I asked him what happened to which he responded "Man, I was COOKING through there and took a turn too hot."
I saw the bike and from the looks of it I'm thinking it might be done. Seeing that the bike cost about a bamillion dollars anyway, it gonna cost twice that much to get it back in shape...assuming there's no frame damage.
On a side note...I have to mention that when we were talking to the doc, he asked me if my buddy smoked. I told him "no". He said "Good...because due to the nature and location of the injury, if he did it probably wouldn't heal and we'd probably have to take the foot off!" After looking around the room, I responded with "What the $#@!! is everyone looking at me for?!?!?"
