DANIA BEACH, Fla. (WSVN) -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a wrong-way wreck after a driver killed two people on a motorcycle and sent himself to the hospital in serious condition.
Police had to close four southbound lanes for hours on Interstate 95, as they investigated and finally cleared the scene around 7 a.m. Friday.
According to FHP, 57-year-old Larry Ranko of Fort Lauderdale traveled northbound in the southbound lanes of I-95 in his two-door 1987 Acura when he crashed into a motorcyclist carrying two people, between Interstate 595 and Griffin Road at 3:30 a.m.
Officials say 24-year-old Erick Tenaille of Coral Gables, the driver of the motorcycle, died on the scene. Rescue crews transported 21-year-old Shaina Scott of Hollywood, the female passenger, to Hollywood Memorial Regional in critical condition where she later died. Crews transported Ranko to Broward General Medical Center in serious condition.
According to public records, Ranko has a heroin felony charge including manufacturing and possession of drug paraphernalia from 1997, three traffic infractions within a month's span in 2006 and one traffic criminal infraction from 2005.
Officials are performing blood work to determine whether alcohol may have contributed to the accident.
