Default All four coils replaced. Anyone else?

My bike is at Yamaha waiting for the delivery of 4 new ignition coils. All 4 had burn marks in the plastic covers. Bikes been misfiring for about a week, its an 03 and obviously still under warranty. From the forum I was under the impression that it was only the US bikes R6R(C) that had this problem. I guess its all the 03 r6's. Has anyone else had them replaced. The service manager at my local Yamaha dealer hadn't heard of this before and he services plenty of r6s. I suggested it was the coils cause of reading all the posts on here. Still waiting to get it back, its been a week.

Yeah this problem is happening with all 03 R6's. It happend to my Black/Flame 03 R6 but it ended up getting stolen and replaced with a new 04 R6 Silver/Flame. The problem is with the Denso ignition coils.. they need to be replaced with the mitsubitshi ignition coils the the 04's have. I got my 03 at the start of 2003 when they first came out and had the problem within 6 months of owning it.. i had about 10,000kms on it when this started happening and just like u the dealer didnt know about it.. i had to get them to contact Yamaha in the US.

I read some where it was only a US problem. If not, how would you tell when it's misfiring?

Hi guys...

I was under the impression that it was a US only problem as well. It would be interesting to hear what brand of coils were in your bike. The Denso or the Mitsubishi? The Denso is the bad one.

My Canadian-spec '03 has the Mitsubishi coils. Believe me, I checked. This would be the first time I have heard of a non-US R6 with the Denso's.

Please update the thread when you find out! Good luck getting the misfire sorted.

I'm 99% sure they were Denso however I never looked myself. I'll ask again to make sure when I get my bike back. My bike went to Yamaha on 23/06 and unfortunately it seems that 04 r6 coils are in demand at the moment. My bike is waiting on a shipment from Japan and hopefully I will have it back by this time next week.

Yeah, it's because all the '03s in the States have depleted all the inventory.

Hope you get back on the road soon. Also hope they keep the old coils so you can find out what brand they were.

There's heaps of info on this in the warranty section so look there. For myself the first time I noticed anything wrong was coming back from Winton in pouring rain after a track day. I got into a town (can't think of its name) and the bike stalled on a down shift and then wouldn't start again; sounded sick like major misfire . Anyway sat for a couple of minutes started the bike again and rode home without issue. Next track day at Phillip Island my bike is just not hitting top speed down the straight 235 -240 instead of previously where it was like 250 - 255 and I was going almost 10 seconds a lap quicker. Start thinking about coils again. Get bike serviced at 11,000km nothing wrong with the coils according to Yamaha. At 13,000km bike starts to misfire under 3000 rpm. The bike was not idling at a steady rate and sounded like a v-twin when revved, it also stalled really easy. When it hit 3000 - 4000 revs the power would return and the bike would sound normal. When it hit 12000rpm there was no noise change but I could feel the acceleration drop noticeably.

Thanks for the update. Interesting to hear they were Denso. Thought it was a US only problem

Glad to hear your bike is not sick anymore.
