how would you tell when it's misfiring?

There's heaps of info on this in the warranty section so look there. For myself the first time I noticed anything wrong was coming back from Winton in pouring rain after a track day. I got into a town (can't think of its name) and the bike stalled on a down shift and then wouldn't start again; sounded sick like major misfire

. Anyway sat for a couple of minutes started the bike again and rode home without issue. Next track day at Phillip Island my bike is just not hitting top speed down the straight 235 -240 instead of previously where it was like 250 - 255 and I was going almost 10 seconds a lap quicker. Start thinking about coils again. Get bike serviced at 11,000km nothing wrong with the coils according to Yamaha. At 13,000km bike starts to misfire under 3000 rpm. The bike was not idling at a steady rate and sounded like a v-twin when revved, it also stalled really easy. When it hit 3000 - 4000 revs the power would return and the bike would sound normal. When it hit 12000rpm there was no noise change but I could feel the acceleration drop noticeably.
