Default Accidental Over Rev

I went to race someone on the street today and I thought I had room for a downshift to get me into the optimal rpm range (hopefully getting me to around 13k), however, it took me in the 15k range and when I punched it, it slammed against the rev limiter (16.5k) and I hurried to shift up. This is my first time hitting the rev limiter and I have learned from my noobish mistake. My question is: does it hurt to hit the rev limiter whether its all the time or just once in a blue moon? Does it depend on how long it is hitting it for, or can you sit there and let it just keep bouncing? I see moto gp racers constantly bounce off the rev limiter in between corners, however, their bikes are setup much different. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
