Yeah, unfortunetly, that is one of many things about bikes that you usually learn the hard way. You can use the car, just don't turn it on.

On this site you can download the manual for your bike. It will show you where everything is in terms of the electrical components. I have experience w/ electrical wiring and might be able to give you some pointers along the way if you need a hand...
