might want to check the detent spring or the shift shaft assembly. i had the exact same problems you are describing.
odd gear changes without my knowledge, hard to shift out of neutral, or couldn't change out of a gear at all.
open up the shift shaft cover and look in there. its the thing right above front sprocket cover. it could either be the detent spring (.80 cents) or the shift shaft assembly (~40.00)
