I dont know about kerosene but wd-40 is cool for cleaning, or get some motrex 611 chain clean its the best i've used. But I always make sure I lube it up as soon as possible after using any kind of chain cleaner.

Also if you dont have a stand, but have a buddy available its easy to do. I keep a can of lube in the trunk and this is how i do it on the go or see somebody that needs it done. Just so they can be a little safer.

Just put it in neutral and put the kick stand down, and have your buddy hold it where the back tire is off the ground while pulling the bike over on the kickstand, you know how you would usually spin the bike in a circle yourself. Then you spin the back tire while lubing. Easy 'nuff. Remember ever 2 fill-ups also.
