As for starting at a higher grit paper is really up to you. You may be able to go with a 240 or 400 grit first but if you don't get enough of the larger scratches and blemishes out of the rims first you may find yourself redoing a lot of work. As I have said before, it's up to you how you want them to look and how much work you put into them.
Hope this helps. This has got to be the Cheapest Best looking mod you could ever do for your bike IMHO. It's one of the most labor intensive, but the results really pay off.

i agree, my rims didn't come out blingy blingy cause i'm lazy and didn't go through every gauge i should have, plus i used steel wool, but they do have a very nice shine to them when theyre cleaned up, and i like it like that, much better than chrome i think, a little much for me. Next bike i'm probably gonna do it just to the rear and have that racy look kinda like rossi's m1.
